On Wednesday, Transport Secretary Jamey Tesler addressed a meeting of the Department for Transport’s board and presented some sobering statistics.

“In 2021, Massachusetts unfortunately recorded over 400 road deaths,” Tesler said, according to SHNS. “This is the highest amount in over 11 years and a 22% increase from 2020.”

According to Tesler, there have been 175 road deaths in Massachusetts this year as of Wednesday, June 22, about a dozen more than the same time last year. Tesler said the number of fatalities so far this year will likely increase as some crashes are still under investigation and fatalities were not included in the most recent tables.

The Department of Transportation said motorcycle deaths were at their highest level in 25 years in Massachusetts.

SHNS reported that a board member raised concerns at Wednesday’s meeting about high speed rates and distracted drivers.

The Ministry of Transport has a Crash Data Portal on its website where you can track the number of traffic accidents (51,290+), road fatalities (175), accidents involving pedestrians (695), bicycles (313) and more.

Tesler said the DOT is trying to “educate, modify behavior and remind drivers” of ways to reduce traffic accidents and fatalities.
