Students begin government internships – Lewiston Sun Journal

REGION – Fifty-two undergraduate and graduate students have started working in state, city and county offices as part of the 2022 Maine Government Summer Internship Program.

The University of Maine’s Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center administers the program, which provides a 12-week full-time work experience for Maine resident students and scholars attending Maine colleges.

Thirty-seven interns work in Maine state government departments, including education; Work; Economic and community development; environmental protection; Finance; and Transportation. Thirteen are attending municipal and county placements in locations ranging from Houlton to Bridgton to Windham. Two other interns are placed with a regional planning commission and a non-profit transportation planning agency.

Student backgrounds include law, business, government, communications, environmental studies, engineering, and economics. They use the knowledge and skills they have acquired in higher education to work as GIS specialists, municipal management assistants, legal interns, data analysts, marketing and planning specialists, multimedia content creators and conservation assistants. Many have expressed interest in pursuing a career in government or public service.

The MCS Policy Center matches each intern with a direct supervisor from the host agency, department, or municipality. Students tackle assigned projects and bring their skills, enthusiasm, and new approaches to issues facing departments and communities. Students gain professional work experience, networking opportunities, and insight into local and state government functions.
