Suspect robs thousands from drug addiction recovery organization

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) — A local organization has lost more than $7,000 after someone allegedly broke in and robbed a staff meeting.

Team Recovery, a local organization that helps people struggling with drug addiction, just opened its new location on West Sylvania Avenue a week ago. During this time, the organization was allegedly robbed and has now lost $7,500 – and it was all caught on tape.

“You hear about stuff like this all the time until it happens to you and then you can watch what actually happens…it makes you sick,” said Matt Bell, CEO of Team Recovery.

Bell says the alleged theft happened Monday afternoon when a man walked into Team Recovery while a staff meeting was in progress just down the hall.

“I had no idea someone came in and went through all of our offices,” Bell said.

Bell says the man spent nearly eight minutes ransacking the offices until he fled in a red vehicle.

It wasn’t until hours later that Bell noticed something was wrong after receiving alerts from his bank. Bell says there were charges totaling about $3,000 and he also noticed cash was missing inside his office. This money was intended to help people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.

“We put a lot of hard work, energy, tears, blood and sweat, money and time into this,” Bell said. “We are here to help people and here we are victims of a senseless crime.”

Bell said he doesn’t want anyone to have to go through this and hopes they can find a solution.

“It’s just a terrible feeling and I don’t want anyone to have to go through it,” Bell says. “I got some answers on who we think it is {and we will continue to give that information to the Toledo police} and hopefully we can find out who it is and get a closure.
