MONROE, La. (AP) — The contenders vying for the Miss Louisiana 2022 title are in the city of Monroe this week for the 58th annual pageant.
Twenty-nine women were featured by the Miss Louisiana Organization at a press conference Monday at the Jack Howard Theater in the Monroe Civic Center, The News Star reported.
“We have 29 beautiful young women who will be competing for scholarships this week here at the Jack Howard Theater,” said Dewana Little, executive director of the Miss Louisiana Organization. “One of these young women will be crowned Miss Louisiana 2022 on Saturday night. It’s going to be a fun week.
Julia Claire Williams, of Kinder and a graduate of the University of Louisiana at Monroe, currently holds the Miss Louisiana title.
The pageant returned in 2021 after its 2020 festivities were put on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Miss Louisiana 2019 Meagan Crews chose to continue her studies at the University of Louisville in Kentucky. Williams took over from Courtney Hammons, a first Crews runner-up, who was asked to step in and serve as Miss Louisiana 2020.
“Working together to build a better future for future generations is important,” Williams said. “Kindness is important and using our God-given gifts and talents to serve others is important, and I really hope that’s the legacy I left this year as Miss Louisiana.”
Williams is expected to attend Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine after passing on her crown on Saturday.
Monroe Mayor Ellis on Friday thanked the Miss Louisiana organization for continuing to hold the pageant in the city.
“We want to continue to be a great partner for you in any way necessary to keep you here,” Ellis said. “It’s very special to have you here and for the 59th year; we want to welcome you back to the city of Monroe. We are here for you.
Preliminary competitions for the contest will take place Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. The final will be televised statewide on Saturday at 8 p.m.
