Texarkana organization provides young adults with opportunities to fly and learn about airplanes

TEXARKANA, TX (KTAL / KMSS) – 4 States Youth Flyers is offering youth ages 8-18 a free opportunity to fly on an airplane and learn about potential career opportunities.

The non-profit organization was founded by Carl A. Bandy, Sr. in August 2021. Bandy is a Texarkana-based pilot and a full-time science teacher at the college. Bandy says the organization‘s goal is to expose as many young people as possible to planes, whether it’s for a career or for fun.

“I looked for the different opportunities that we have and don’t have for young people, and I just felt inspired that we had to find something unique and different for them,” Bandy said.

Before the young adults board the plane, Bandy goes over the different features of his plane, naming each part and its function.

The organization is based in Texarkana, but the nonprofit organization serves 12 airports within a 70 mile radius.

“We take students and pilots from an airport and send them back to the same airport,” Bandy said. “We give them a glimpse of what it takes to fly and the person who is in the right seat as the co-pilot will actually be the person who handles the controls.”

After the first flight, each student receives a certificate, a logbook and becomes a member of the EAA. Membership gives them access to flight and aviation courses, as well as aviation scholarships.
