Berkeley County organization wants driver input to improve US-52 corridor

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCBD) – US-52 is a busy highway that locals believe could require serious work.

“We are looking at road safety,” said Sarah Cox, senior transportation planner for the Berkeley-Charleston-Dorchester Council of Governments (BCDCOG). “Capacity off the road, as well as the traffic needs on this corridor. “

Improvements to the US-52 have been at the center of BCDCOG’s concerns for months now.

“We’re looking at how to move vehicles,” Cox said. “How to meet the needs of cyclists and pedestrians and this network. How can we come up with alternative travel options that would include transits, and in particular premium high capacity transit? ”

The organization will hold two public consultation meetings Monday and Tuesday to hear drivers’ concerns and their view of the roadway.

“We have to go into the community,” Cox said. “To hear what they want, see what the medium or long term vision is for their community. “

BCDCOG says it’s not looking to make drastic changes to the hallway right away.

“We want to maximize our existing infrastructure and our existing investment in that infrastructure as best as possible before we start to think about adding anything more,” she said.

Officials say the plan is to prepare the Lowcountry for growth in the future.

“There are opportunities to improve on what we have today,” Cox said. “But we have to start laying the foundations in 10 or 20 years.”
