Celebrate the New Year with a French twist, immerse yourself in some outdoor Scandinavian philosophies, or sign up for webinars to learn more about preserves while staying warm and warm indoors. (Zoom webinar) Breakfast and learning – Winter recreation: noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 5, online. Learn about winter recreation activities in the Will County Forest Preserve District, and reserves ideal for hiking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, wildlife viewing and more . (Roméoville) Happy New Year – A New Year Celebration! : 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday January 5, Musée de l’Isle à la Cache. Celebrate the New Year like it did in 1759 with this French Canadian fur trader style program that features stories and games from the land of Illinois. Enjoy a hot drink around a roaring fire. And make vintage French crafts to take home as a keepsake of this family event and the Happy New Year, or Happy New Year, to come. Free, from 6 years old. (Zoom webinar) Bird watching on reserves: 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, January 6, online. Take a virtual hike with the Will County Forest Preserve District to learn about a specific reserve and how to find birds on your own. Get tips and tricks on where to look and how to identify common birds. Free, all ages. Register online for the Zoom link.

(Township of Lockport) Pliking – Lockport Prairie Nature Preserve Mini Hike: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, Lockport Prairie Nature Reserve. Join the Will County Forest Preserve District for a sporting outing. Pliking is a version of the Swedish plogging activity, which involves collecting litter while jogging. The backpacking version is also a great way to enjoy the outdoors while removing canned waste and improving your health. Dress for the weather and bring gloves. Garbage bags and garbage collectors will be provided. Free, from 18 years old. Register online before January 6 or call 815-727-8700.

(Canton of Crete) Day of nature games – Snow: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, January 12, Plum Creek Nature Center. Join the Forest Preserve District for this monthly nature-themed program for toddlers. The theme for January is snow. Free, 3-5 years old. Register online before January 12 or call 708-946-2216.

(Zoom Webinar) Friluftsliv – Outdoor Life: 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, January 13, online. The Norwegian philosophy of friluftsliv (pronounced free-loofts-liv) means life in the open air or in the open air. Learn how to enjoy the weather outdoors despite the weather during this webinar on the Will County Forest Preserve. Viewers will also learn how friluftsliv can help you relax, improve your mood, and feel more peaceful. Free, from 18 years old. Register online for the Zoom link.

(New Township of Lenox) Hadley Valley Excursion Hike: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 22 at Hadley Valley Preserve – access to Gougar Road. After watching the January 13 webinar “Friluftsliv – The Outdoor Life” (see above), don’t hesitate to sign up for an 11 km hike based on this Norwegian philosophy.
