SGA approves 75% of requested funding for 11 student organizations

The Senate of the Student Government Association on Thursday granted 75% of the requested funding – or $ 35,000 – to 11 student organizations in its first funding approval of the semester. The Senate vote followed the approval of the Financial Affairs Committee.

This was the SGA’s first vote on student organization funding since the Senate reduced funding cap of $ 10,000 to $ 7,500 per organization on September 2.

The FAC provides funding to student organizations to facilitate out-of-class learning and engagement through events, trips and projects. Its 2021-22 calendar can be viewed on the SGA website. Applications are reviewed by FAC on an ongoing basis for a funding period of 60 days.

Five of the 11 organizations that received funding on Thursday serve students from racial or ethnic minorities, including the Saudi Student Association, the Nepalese Students Association, the Future Black Law Students Association, the Iranian Students Association and the Afro American Gospel Choir. Funding for these organizations was approximately $ 12,200.

“We’re really proud of this,” said Sullivan Irvine, vice president of financial affairs for SGA. “We are proud of every financial award we have given to student organizations and how they exemplify our mission to serve the student body. ”

Bama Racing, the Alabama Rocketry Association and the UA Vedic Society also received $ 14,200 for equipment and supplies.

“CAF funding is a great example of our commitment to serving students,” said Olivia Davis, SGA Press Secretary.
