HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) – A group of people in West Huntington, West Virginia, are making a difference one block at a time.
A partnership between the city’s âLove Your Block West Huntingtonâ program, the City’s Waste Support Program and KYOWVA area’s Goodwill Industries aims to clean up West Huntington in a sustainable manner.
Kelli Moore, a member of the KYOWVA area’s Goodwill Facility Based Work Adjustment Training and Industries, says she has family in the area and it’s good to know the area will be clean when they come out.
I have a nephew who lives not too far from here, so I like to clean up the community for him. To improve the community for him, so that when he plays outside he doesn’t have to worry about stepping on something or getting pricked by a needle.

This is a long-standing problem in this area of ââWest Huntington. Gina Browning of Goodwill Industries in the KYOWVA area says they see a lot of âpassing people passing byâ and it is important to make sure the area is cleaned up.
Unfortunately with the increase in drug activity in the area we have pretty much every day after closing people somehow go through donations to the outside and our salvage bins, and so tear it up c is a daily occurrence for us to have to come every morning and clean it up.

Thanks to the Love Your Block mini-grant, the clean-up team received specialized equipment to help them in their efforts.
New items include:
- Litter collectors
- Garbage bag
- Puncture resistant gloves
Huntington Town Planning Director Breanna Shell said they were looking to partner with an organization. Their hopes are that this organization “embraces this bloc in the longer term”.
