Leading Nursing Organizations Provide Guidance For Nursing Programs Regarding Unvaccinated Students | Your money

Chicago, September 28, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – NCSBN and eight other leading nursing organizations * have released a guidance note to provide guidance to nursing education program boards that receive requests for ‘students for alternative clinical experiences when a program clinical sites require the COVID-19 vaccine.

Maryann Alexander, NCSBN Director of Nursing, Maryann Alexander, PhD, RN, FAAN, comments: “As lead nurses, we wanted to provide guidance to nursing programs that treat a small number of non-core students. vaccinated. Clinical experiences are crucial for nursing training and simulation, although they are extremely valuable, they cannot completely replace direct care experience. “

The guidance document highlights recommendations for nursing programs that include communicating with students hesitant about vaccination and advice on the benefits of the vaccine and dispelling any myths and misinformation that students may have. If mandated by the academic institution, students can refuse the vaccine. If not entitled to reasonable accommodation under disability laws or for sincere religious belief, the student may be deregistered from the nursing institution / program or may not be able to meet the clinical requirements of the program, which does not graduate them.

“We know that vaccination protects both the person vaccinated and the people in their care. Our hope is that unvaccinated nursing students follow the science and get the COVID-19 vaccine, ”notes Alexander.
